I remember always having to remember wearing sneakers on "gym day" in school. Having clean sneakers meant one of two things:
First, your mother got tired of looking at your dirty sneakers and finally put them in the washing machine. Mom's version of how to clean sneakers was well-intentioned but generally frowned upon by most sneaker makers today. Do you remember than banging sound sneakers used to make as they were tumbled inside the washing machine?
The second reason that you didn't have dirty sneakers was that your parents bought you new sneakers. I remember feeling nervous about getting new sneakers dirty. There always seemed to be at least one friend that felt the need to step on your foot, the minute they realized you were wearing new sneakers. All it took was that one time to get your sneakers dirty, then you were off the hook. You didn't have to learn how to clean sneakers because they would get washed by mom or replaced, and life went on.

There are certain similarities between the recommendations of how to clean sneakers from each of the major sneaker makers. There are also certain "do not do" things that all makers advise against doing. One of those is washing your big brand sneakers in a washing machine. Just do not take the easy road out with this for whatever reasons they have.
Clean your sneakers by hand, not with the washer. They also advise against getting your sneakers too close to a heat source, such as ablow dryer or heater, as heat can warp rubber. This is also a reason not to use the washing machine and then the dryer. Sneakers should be air-dried.

Nike Recommendations (as of the date of writing)
"To ensure peak performance of your shoes over time, we recommend proper care and maintenance, including cleaning. You can keep your sneakers fresh with a few easy cleaning steps:
Dry brush. Remove dirt from the outsole, midsole, and uppers using a dry, soft-bristled shoe brush. No shoe brush? No problem—an older toothbrush will work just fine.
Make a mild cleaning solution. Mix warm water with a small amount of laundry detergent.
Wash laces. Remove the laces and apply a small amount of the mild cleaning solution. Massage the laces, rinse, then dry with a soft cloth.
Wash soles. Apply the mild solution to a soft-bristled brush and brush the outsole and midsole. Dry with a soft cloth.
Wash and blot. Use the mild solution and a soft-bristled brush or a soft cloth to clean the uppers. Then use a dry microfiber towel or soft cloth to blot and lift as much soapy moisture and dirt as possible. Repeat if necessary.
Air dry. Air dry at room temperature.
We don’t recommend putting your shoes in a washing machine or dryer or using harsh cleaning products (like bleach). And for best results, clean your sneakers as soon as they get dirty. Then lace up and get back out there."
Editor's Note: The "outsole" or "sole" is the bottom of your sneaker. The "midsoles" are the side portion of the sneaker, adjacent to the outsole. The "uppers" would be the remaining surface area, separate of the laces.
